Kicking the tires (figuratively and literally) with Orso Content Manager, Nia Roberts

What do content marketing and old car maintenance have in common? Nia Roberts, Orso’s Content Manager, takes pride in mastering both. When Atlanta-based Nia isn’t polishing and scheduling clients’ content or checking her tires, she’s chasing her cats for photos that make it look like they like each other. Read on for Nia’s thoughts on content, cats, cars, and cupcake websites.

So let’s start with the basics: What brought you to Orso?

Long story short: I knew someone who knew someone and we made a video about cupcakes!

…What now?

I had a friend introduce me to Brian Hall, who was doing some consulting work and looking for a content person to help him. Brian’s expertise was spotting friction on websites – tiny flaws, missed details, and quick wins that improve the user experience. One day, he asked me to take a look at a cupcake site with fresh eyes and give my honest take as an outsider. Of course, he recorded it so this video ended up on YouTube of me reviewing this cupcake website and just complaining. Like about how I couldn’t find any cupcakes, how I couldn’t make an order. It was so funny.

Well it turns out, Brian was also a friend of Vince’s, and when Orso was looking to expand the content team, Brian recommended me. One cupcake video and a few conversations later, I joined the team at Orso.

So… you’re saying Vince internet-stalked you and then invited you to work for Orso?

That’s correct.

Tell us about your Content role.

I work as a Content Manager, so I support our clients’ social media efforts, email marketing, and develop some web content. Basically any channel that touches content. I love working with social media in particular, especially Instagram. Our clients have the most beautiful photos that we use to market their goods and services and I really enjoy seeing those efforts come to life. Especially if a picture has flowers in it. If there are flowers, I’m happy.

Our clients do a great job of this, but if I could give advice to any company looking to improve their content strategy, I’d say invest in the content itself: get great photos, videos, and copy. People often jump ahead to “Oh, we need a social media manager,” but really, you need strategy and content first so that channels can be properly planned. A robust set of content also lets you be consistent, and you can’t grow an audience without consistency.

Aside from beautiful images, what else do you love about your work?

I love that I get to work with a variety of different businesses! My previous job consisted of in-house work with companies so I had to focus on one at a time. My work with Orso allows me to see what it’s like working in interior design, retail, or the food industry. I learn so much and it’s creative, fun work.

How do you stay organized supporting so many different types of businesses? What does a typical day look like?

Well, I wake up early because my two cats are typically hounding me for breakfast. So the first thing I do is fix them breakfast. Then I always start with a calendar review to see what the day looks like; what will I be working on, who am I meeting? I get ready, then spend the day hammering out the work that needs to be done. Throughout the days I’m always communicating with Kelly and Krista, we tend to go back and forth quite a bit to stay aligned and organized for our various clients. Then I end the day with my cats!

Tell us about the kitties!

Aw, Chi Chi and Leo. Chi Chi is three, Leo is two and a half, and they’re both tabbies; one gray-brown, and one orange.

Unfortunately, they don’t vibe with each other. They don’t get along. I have to feed them separately, play separately. It’s been two years so I’m not holding out hope. And it’s become a running joke with my colleagues, like “Hey Nia, are the cats getting along yet?”

They’re also funny because they don’t like pictures at all. They see me coming with the little black box – my phone – and just take off. So they’re hard to capture but I’ll try to share a few.

What else are you into these days?

I love taking walks, reading, hanging out with friends, making homemade birria tacos. I like to cook, but I’m not a good cook; I’m on a journey to become a good cook. And I guess that’s something I’m into, just mastering new skills. I really like to challenge myself.

What’s something you mastered that you’re especially proud of?

Taking care of my old car! It’s a 2005 Chevy Malibu passed down to me by my dad. That thing has over 300,000 miles on it. Every stat on it suggests that it should be done for, but I take really good care of it. I’m not a mechanic and I don’t get under the hood but I’ve learned how to maintain every possible thing.

At this point, I’ve exceeded my dad’s expectations of the car’s life by over 100,000 miles – he’s impressed. But to me it was just like, look, I either need to learn how to do this or be on the side of the road.

Time for the hotseat…

  • Travel vacation or staycation? Travel vacation 🏝️
  • What has been your all time favorite pair of shoes? A pair of snakeskin boots that I try my hardest to wear whenever I can 👢
  • Be honest: how long can you spend playing with a laser pointer and watching your cats go nuts? Only a few seconds. They’re hard to impress 🐱
  • Dream car (not that the Malibu will EVER go)… Dream car is a Volvo XC60 🚙

If you, too, would like to tease Nia about her cats’ frenemy-ship and benefit from her content marketing expertise, let us know. Sometimes, all it takes is someone with creativity, curiosity, and an interest in your business to take your marketing efforts to the next level.
